Skin Resurfacing and Rejuvenation
Thanks to modern technology, non-surgical skin procedures are one the fastest growing cosmetic techniques used by women and men alike who no longer want to live with permanent scarring and signs of aging. With greater leisure time and more exposure to the sun as well as more stressful lives, it’s the skin, the largest organ of our body that gets to tell the story of our excesses first. Premature wrinkling and sagging are becoming the norm of the day with the unhealthy lifestyles being practiced these days.

Let’s not put all the blame on current lifestyles however as other factors like acne, skin disorders as well as hereditary factors can also contribute to skin irregularities on the face as well as the rest of the body.

Some of the conditions that can be improved by skin rejuvenation and resurfacing procedures include
Wrinkles that are present all the time and don’t change with facial movement. Also, wrinkles that deepen with changes in expressions.
Areas of hyperpigmentation due to freckles, sun-spots or darkened patches.
Scarring is the least tolerated insult to the skin and includes acne, rosacea or injury marks. These could present as pitted, wavy, discolored or with raised borders.
Vascular conditions include vascular lesions that present as tiny blisters filled with blood, a flushed red face or unsightly creeping blood vessels visible over the skin surface.
The removal of non-cancerous or pre-cancerous skin outgrowths like keratoses.
Similar to requirements before going for other surgical procedures, your skin specialist will have to first ascertain that you are physically fit, don’t smoke and any history of allergies before proceeding with any skin treatment. Your ethnicity, skin color and age are also important factors here. He or she will also want you to have positive, but realistic goals for skin improvements as the goal is to resurface the outer layers of the skin only.

Some of the easily available skin resurfacing methods in Bengaluru includes the following

  • Chemical Peels – The skin is first cleansed off all impurities and oil to prepare it for treatment by chemicals such as mild glycolic acid or TCA, with phenol providing the deepest skin peel. These chemicals remove the epidermis, allowing acid penetration into the deeper dermis. Light peels give a fresh look while deeper peels remove/reduce wrinkles.
  • Dermabrasion – After application of local anesthetic, your skin specialist uses a high-speed rotating brush to remove off the top layers of skin. Greater scarring or wrinkling requires longer sessions of dermabrasion.
  • Laser surgery – High-energy laser waves vaporize off the upper skin lasers instantly without any trauma, reducing wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. This resurfacing procedure stimulates collagen and new skin cells production in the deeper layers of the skin.

Some residual swelling and tenderness may remain for 2-4 weeks, and you will be strongly advised to avoid the sun. Follow-up care should be stringently followed to avoid unfortunate side-effects.
