5 ways to prevent face mask skin problems
As we enter the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the emphasis on safety and protection is increasing by the day. With different variants forming as time goes by, one thing we can say with absolute assurance is that we need to “mask up”. Wearing masks has become second nature to us as we are required to wear them while we step out for work, the market, or even to restaurants and social gatherings.
Wearing masks for short periods to several hours in the day can have ill effects on our facial skin. One can develop dryness, itchiness, acne, eczema and multiple skin-related issues. It can be caused by various reasons such as sweating, clogged pores, chafing, and even allergy from the different materials used in face masks.

Here are 5 simple ways to prevent face mask-related skin problems by Dr Divya Sharma, one of the top dermatologists in Bangalore.
While it is essential to wear a face mask, here are a few routines one can incorporate into their daily lives to ensure healthy skin and to avoid face mask-related skin problems.
While it is essential to wear a face mask, here are a few routines one can incorporate into their daily lives to ensure healthy skin and to avoid face mask-related skin problems.
Wash your face regularly
One must follow their daily skincare routine basics like washing their face regularly.
Once in the morning
Once in the night, before going to bed
After you sweat or after a workout
Every time we come back from a visit outside

Use the right cleanser and moisturizer.
It's important to use lukewarm water and a gentle face cleanser to help remove excess oils and bacteria. Pat your face dry with a soft towel use a Vitamin C topical cream to evenly moisturize the face as this keeps the skin hydrated and helps boost skin health. Use a lip balm to keep the lips from chapping or drying.

Choose the right face mask
To avoid most mask-related skin issues, it is important to choose the mask that best suits your skin type while keeping you protected from COVID-19.
It must have 2-3 layers of fabric
Has a snug fit, not too loose or too tight.
Made of natural fibers such as cotton
Clip on the nose to avoid air leaks

Make sure you wash your mask every few days if you wish to reuse the masks. Avoid wearing masks made of synthetic materials like nylon and polyester as they irritate the skin.
Remove your mask frequently
Research suggests that removing your mask for 15 mins every 4 hours can help your skin breathe and provide it with the necessary fresh air it needs. Please ensure you follow all social distancing norms before you take off your mask in public spaces.

Skip the makeup
While it might not always be possible, skipping the makeup when using the face mask for an extended period can be beneficial to the skin. Beneath the mask, the makeup may tend to clog the pores and lead to acne or breakouts. We also do not recommend trying new products or routines as they make your skin more sensitive.

Although face mask-related skin problems can get quite frustrating and often cause stress, it is of utmost importance that we wear them and follow the COVID-19 protocols. Having said that, a few practices like using the right mask, washing your face regularly, and using the right products for skin care can reduce the chances of outbreaks and help reduce skin irritation.

If your skin problems seem severe, please seek a treatment plan from a dermatologist near you by booking an appointment and follow their recommendations.
