Microneedling benefits and side effects/risks
Microneedling is a popular cosmetic procedure that involves puncturing the skin with tiny needles. It is performed by dermatologists to treat different skin conditions, reduce fine lines, acne scars, and much more to improve skin texture.
Sticking needles into your face might sound painful and terrifying, but the results have left many people raving about this procedure.
Here’s all you need to know about microneedling.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat skin concerns. Miniature, sterilised needles are used to create micro punctures in the skin to draw blood. This triggers the body’s natural healing response and stimulates collagen production.
The collagen produced as a result of the skin’s healing process after the procedure can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, fine lines and dark spots as well as improves skin elasticity. Some studies even suggest that collagen induction therapy may also be useful for alopecia.
Benefits of microneedling
Microneedling gained popularity as a considerably less expensive option for laser therapy and for its growing list of benefits. Also, the procedure causes minimal discomfort to the skin and has very little downtime compared to laser treatment.
Here are some benefits of microneedling:
Minimally invasive requires little to no downtime
Rejuvenate and plump skin
Reduced appearance of scars
Reduced acne scars
Reduction of wrinkles and fine lines
Tightening of enlarged pores
Reduction of dark spots and hyperpigmentation
Correction of uneven skin tone
Improved skin elasticity
Reduction of stretch marks
Side effects/risks of microneedling
As with many cosmetic procedures, microneedling has some risks. Some common side effects are skin irritation during the procedure and redness for a few days afterward. If you notice more severe side effects such as bruising, bleeding, or infection, please reach out to your dermatologist immediately.
Microneedling is considered safe for most who are in good health; however, it is not recommended if you have skin conditions such as eczema, or skin psoriasis. People with sensitive skin, active acne, and a history of skin scars are advised to consult a dermatologist before opting for microneedling.
If you have certain skin concerns that haven’t responded well to home treatments or other procedures, such as chemical peels microneedling could be an option. Consultation with your dermatologist can help you decide if this or any other procedure is right for your skin.
What to do after microneedling?
Depending on the requirement, you may need multiple sessions of microneedling for desired effects. Four to five treatment sessions can induce collagen production for 3 to 6 months. Results may vary based on skin type and the treatment plan.
Post-procedure: avoid sun exposure. Using makeup or skin care products with retinol or alpha-hydroxy acids is to be avoided since your skin is ultra-sensitive after the procedure. You may use an antioxidant serum or cooling masks. To help your skin heal after the procedure stay hydrated.
