What to expect in an anti-aging cream?

Aging is an inevitable and irreversible process. Prevention is the easiest and most cost-effective approach. Most of the patients come asking whether they should start the regime or wait for some time. I suggest the earlier you start, the better it is. While buying your anti-aging cream, please look for the following components, and I shall try to elucidate their benefits as well.

It does help in the decrease of melanin (responsible for pigmentation) production and can be used in which is a combination with other skin lightening agents.

Apart from sun protection it also helps in collagen production hence helping with wrinkling and other signs of aging.

Sunscreens block only 55% of the free radicals but do not help in their neutralization. Hence a combination of topical Vitamin C along with sunscreen will provide more effective photoprotection.

When the skin is exposed to UV light leading to the formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS), Vitamin C scavenges the free radicals preventing cell injury. (The oxidized form left behind can be converted to Vit C by enzymes in the presence of glutathione).

Vitamin C is found as Ascorbic acid and D- ascorbic acid. The former is the active form which is useful as an antioxidant.

Humans lack the enzyme required for synthesizing Vitamin C on its own and hence need to acquire from natural sources.

It is available as a variety of creams, serums, and patches. The serum is the only colourless form of Vit C which gets oxidized to Dehydroascorbic acid giving it a yellow colour. It is stable at a pH of 3.5 and gets transported to the skin. It is bioavailable in the surface only up to four days and hence needs to be applied regularly. It is more stable if combined with Ferulic acid. The absorption increases after laser resurfacing or microdermabrasion.

It is of special use in people who smoke to reverse aging and can be applied in stretch marks along with other treatments.

Vitamin c stabilizes and regenerates vitamin E and has added the benefit of moisturizing properties. I would recommend the combination, especially in dry skin. I would be writing about more of these commonly found products on the shelf in the coming days for enhancing understanding of the real anti-aging creams which are useful.
