Understanding the Effects of UV Rays on Skin and Hair

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, an important month to learn about how UV rays affect our skin and hair. It's critical to understand the possible risks that UV rays pose and to take preventative measures to safeguard ourselves from UV rays.

What are UV rays and the types?

The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) rays, an invisible form of electromagnetic energy that profoundly affects our health in both beneficial and harmful ways, even though we cannot feel them.

There are three types of UV rays:-

  •  UVA rays have the longest wavelengths, allowing them to deeply penetrate the skin layers. 

  • UVB rays, with shorter wavelengths, are more energetic and primarily cause sunburn. 

  • UVC rays have the shortest wavelengths and are the most energetic and potentially harmful, though they are mostly absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere and do not reach the ground.

The Impact of UV Rays on Skin and Hair

UV radiation from the sun has a significant impact on both skin and hair. UV rays are the main cause of sunburn on the skin, which is defined by redness, discomfort, and perhaps blistering. UV rays also cause wrinkles, sagging skin, and age spots by penetrating deeper into the skin. UV rays also weakens the skin's defences against infections and increases vulnerability to a range of skin conditions by suppressing the skin's immune system.

UV rays can cause dryness and brittleness in hair by destroying the hair shaft's outermost layer of protection. The damage weakens the hair's general strength and increases its susceptibility to breaking. UV rays also impact hair colour over time, both naturally occurring and artificially coloured pigments will fade. Long-term UV exposure damages the protein structure of hair, leaving it more vulnerable to environmental variables and regular styling procedures. 

Don’t skip the sunscreen.

Protecting Your Skin and Hair

  1. Use Sunscreen: Apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect yourself against UV rays. Reapply sunscreen every two hours for consistent protection.

  2. Seek Shade: Limit direct sun exposure, especially during peak hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.

  3. Wear Protective Clothing: Choose lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with UV protection.

  4. Use UV-Protectant Hair Products: To prevent UV damage, look for hair products that have UV filters or antioxidant-rich chemicals.

  5. Wear Hats or Scarves: Cover your hair with a hat, scarf, or UV-protective clothing to shield it from direct sunlight.

  6. Avoid tanning beds: The UV rays from these machines can be just as damaging as those from the sun.
