Hard water contains un-dissolved salts of Calcium and Magnesium. They disrupt the outer protective layers of the skin, which affects the skin’s natural moisturization process negatively. Here in Bangalore, the water is hard and hence we frequently come across patients who experience excessive skin dryness. We also see many from the pediatric population having atopic dermatitis for the same reason.

We also observe a rise in the number of acne cases, especially of the late onset kind. There is a subset of patients here, who do not have any hormonal balance but still have acne recalcitrant to conventional therapy. The salts in hard water can precipitate on the skin and can aggravate a pre-existing tendency to develop atopic eczema. Using hard water can also result in back acne of the most severe nature.
